Love at first sight

As some people suspected I would, I have fallen in love in Malta......

Needless to say, I enjoyed my first visit to the SPCA rehoming centre. It was an emotional but lovely experience and I think I may get hooked on the place.

This gorgeous springer pup was in a litter of six found in a skip, in a sealed sack. Two of the pups suffocated, one died a few days after arriving at the home and the other three now have homes to go to. She was absolutely adorable, how could anyone be so cruel??!!!!!!!!! But her faith in humans has not been disparaged, thanks to the excellent staff at SPCA who seem to very quickly and successfully rehab the animals. I guess they are better at forgiving and forgetting than us mere humans.

I expected lots of aggressive and antisocial dogs, but they were all so healthy and friendly. They literally just want affection, scrambling over each other just to get a sniff and lick of your hand. Unconditional love at its finest.

There were lots of puppies and kittens, which obviously can be rehomed more successfully than older dogs and cats. On average one animal a day gets rehomed. There are a couple of now quite institutionalised dogs that have been there up to 5 years, which is really sad, but the staff adore them and they are healthy and cared for. I guess it's still better than what they had before.
Note to self: you can't have one.

  3. They really need toys and bedding. I wish I could take loads of stuff in, their needs could be so easily met but things are so much more expensive here.

I literally got licked by 180 dogs, they were all so friendly and just wanted a fuss. Definitely rewarding and I cannot wait to go back. Its messy work and I need some cheap clothes and wellies - bit of a mission to find in Malta in summer! Will scour Valletta market tomorrow.

Today I am recovering from yet another night in Paceville. A healthy balance of work and play he he he

  4. You CANNOT adopt 180 dogs! And more to follow. It's more about why they are there in the first place and what you might be able to do to reduce 180. Take care and I will ring soon. Mum xxoo
