Taking its name "the victorious" from the Great Seige of 1565; it was here that the Knights of St John made their final stand against the Turks. Before then it was known as Birgu (many towns and streets have two names out here - sat navs have no chance!). Despite its historical appeal, it is very quiet and mostly residential. I thought it was a really lovely little "city".
My first Dogs Trust campaign brought me here, chosen because its actually a deprived area; the yachts clearly don't belong to the locals then!
It looks lovely. So what did you do there with The Dog's Trust?
ReplyDeleteWhat's all this 'history stuff'? Not like you at all!!!
xxoo
You can't really escape history here!
ReplyDeleteDT were offering residents of Victoriosa free neutering, chipping and health check. Its amazing the pursuading/"educating" that has to go on; they think it's cruel to neuter, but they dont seem to think its cruel to kill the unwanted puppies with a brick or suffocate them. I think we gave away about 20 vouchers which isn't bad for the size of the town I guess. The DT goal is to neuter 35,000 dogs in 5 years. They have been here a year and only done about 1000 so a long way to go. The main target is the farmers who have about 20 very poorly kept dogs who are constantly multiplying!
They are doing a different town every 2 weeks, choosing the most deprived areas in the south of the island. I'll go along to as many as I can, although in those areas they generally speak Maltese so it is difficult.
